Alice’s on Rathdowne
Located in a charming 1890s Victorian terrace on Rathdowne Street, Alice's Bookstore was a beloved local institution. Just before the pandemic hit, the building changed hands. The new owners had big plans: to turn the space into a multi-use art and craft centre, including an office, a renovated apartment, and expanding the rooftop terrace.
One key goal for the new owners was to make the building adaptable for the future, allowing for potential changes in its use. The layout was carefully considered to ensure smooth circulation and address important technical aspects like fire safety, acoustics, and services compliance, all while working with the challenges of an older structure.
By incorporating its classic features, the Victorian character of the original building was successfully preserved. The ground floor was adorned with decorative timber elements and contemporary touches, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The shopfront was restored with new hand-glazed subway tiles and powdercoated window frames to maintain the building's historic charm while embracing a more modern aesthetic.
The new art and craft center, now known simply as "Alice's," pays homage to the original bookstore and its legacy in the local community.
“My partner and I purchased a Victorian double storey property in a heritage area needing much love and updating and very fortunately engaged Thy Tran. The property was classified as having "significant heritage importance" and required diligent attention to comply with the many regulations. Thy not only navigated thru the enormous restrictions, she was able to design a superb considerable renovation that brought the property into twenty first century whilst retaining its heritage beauty.”
